Do more than a web search with Google
Everybody knows Google, but only a few know that it can do more than search the web. Learn the tricks of Google usage in this article.
I have no doubt that you know what Google is and what it does, but do you know that besides searching the web Google can actually do much more? Let me show you a few useful tips about Google search engine that might come in handy.
Calculator
The first exciting feature of Google is its ability to calculate mathematical expressions. For example, if you input "2*2" in the search box and press Google Search - it will actually show the multiplication result. You can also use various mathematical functions, such as "2*2 + sqrt(4) + sin(90)". A factorial also has a special operator (for example "5!").
Also you can perform conversion operations with the same calculator. For example "5 miles in kilometers" would return how many kilometers 5 miles consists of.
Definitions
If you do not know what some word means, you can always type "define:word" in Google's search box and it will list possible definitions for the specified word or phrase.
Searching for files
Sometimes you might want to search for information in special documents rather than webpages. For example you remember that once you've downloaded a file "some file.doc" by entering a query "some query" and you need to find this file again. It will be simplier if you specified to search through only "doc" files. This can be easily done, appending the "filetype:doc" to the end of your query. For example "nuclear plant filetype:doc".
Search in a website
If you need to search some website, but that website does not have a search integrated - try Google. Type the search keyword in the searchbox and append "site:www.site-name.com". So if you want to find some recipe in www.some-recipe-site.com, use "recipe site:www.some-recipe-site.com".
Weather
If you would like to see a weather forecast for some region, try typing "weather your_city_name" in the search box. This should display weather conditions in your city.
External links
If you run a website and you would like to know who has links, pointing to your website, type "link:www.yoursitename.com" in the searchbox.
So hopefully you've learned something new today and will know how to use this knowledge the next time you open the most popular search engine in the world.
